Abstract: Objective To study the etiology,clinical manifestation,diagnosis and treatment of painful ophthalmoplegia syndrome. Methods the model of onset,clinical manifestation,laboratory examination,neuroimaging and treatment of such 12 cases hospitalized from 2000 to 2005, and literatures were retrospectively reviewed. Results The type ,the site of such 12 cases’ headache were greatly different individually. The involved cranial nerves were often seen with Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ1-2 and Ⅵ,especially with the cranial nerve Ⅲ .Diseases which would cause headache along with ophthalmoplegia must be excluded before the diagnose of the painful ophthalmoplegia syndrome was established.Neuroimaging was important for the diagnose of painful ophthalmoplegia syndrome .Patients were sensitively responsive to hormonotherapy. Conclusions: The study with THS patients’clinical manifestation ,image check and the response to hormonotherapy showed that the etiology of nonspecific inflammation was supported.Disease with similar manifestation must be excluded .Patients were better response to hormonotherapy.
