Myopia is one of the most common ocular affections in Asia, with huge health related and economical consequences.Several non-invasive treatment methods for progressive myopia in children, such as convex additions and contact lenses, have been tested in the last decades with limited success. Some of those methods were able to slow myopia progression by a significant amount in some children, but none of them was able to stop it。
In the last years, new ideas based on animal research have emerged;current methods have been improved and old ways rediscovered. This paper reviews some of the most promising leads to slow myopia progression.Several of those treatments have already shown good results on isolated patients or in small sample studies, such as soft bifocal contact lenses, orthokeratology or prismatic additions. However, those findings have to be confirmed in large controlled clinical studies. Finally,as the ultimate goal of clinicians is to avoid any onset of myopia, the specific case of Pre-Myopes is discussed. |
