Laser in-situ keratomilieusis (LASIK) has revolutionized refractive surgery. Presently, mechanical microkeratomes are still the most popular methods of corneal flap creation, and the technology is still being continuously improved. Intralase Femtosecond technology, on the other hand, represents a new paradigm shift in flap creation, and with its concept of an “all-laser, blade-less” LASIK, it is beginning to win over the hearts of many LASIK surgeons and patients.
This paper discusses the concept, advantages and disadvantages of Intralase Femtosecond LASIK. It will also explore the question of whether “ Intralase is the way to the future” by looking at the flap reproducibility, visual outcome, intra-operative and post-operative complications, and financial cost of Intralase vs mechanical microkeratomes.
