尽管在治疗DME方面已有巨大进展，但还需有效、副作用更小的治疗措施。目前研究的重点在于寻求破坏性更小的预防或治疗DME的方法，同时应考虑患者的健康相关性生命质量。PKC—β阻制剂能够降低血—视网膜屏障的通透性，减少渗出[39]。氩激光光凝联合中药治疗黄斑水肿也取得了较好治疗效果[40]。另有研究通过补氧增加视网膜氧供，减轻黄斑水肿，当黄斑厚度下降到一定程度时，激光光凝作用就能更好地体现[41]。口服COX—2抑制剂治疗DME的研究也在进行中。
