Purpose:To identify the prevalence of corneal arcus and its systemic risk factors in the Singapore Malay population. The associations between corneal arcus and the prevalence of some systemic disorders were also analysed.
Method:All 3,280 participants had interview, standardized ocular examination, systemic examination and laboratory investigations to determine the prevalence of corneal arcus and risk factors.Associations between corneal arcus and risk factors were estimated by multinominal analysis.
Results:After adjusting for age and gender, risk factors of corneal arcus were identified:male(OR,1.58),age(OR per 10 yrs1,41),diabetes(OR,1.23),low high density lipoprotein(OR,1.23)and alcohol intake(OR,2.04).A weak association(OR)of diastolic blood pressure and corneal arcus was noticed. After the same adjustment, corneal arcus was found to be associated with a higher prevalence of high triglycerides(OR,1.22)and hypercholesterolemia(OR,1.27)but a lower prevalence of diabetes(OR,0.82). Conclusions:Corneal arcus is related to systemic lipid abnormality and might be served as a risk factor in systemic disorders induced by dyslipidemia.
