香港中文大学•汕头大学联合汕头国际眼科中心 Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science Chinese University of Hongkong 515041 Purpose:To assess the impact of cataract screening in rural China.
Method:Persons with cataract identified during screening and presenting at clinic were administered questionnaires assessing barriers to surgery.
Results:122(84.1%)screening subjects(S)and 83(86.5%)clinic patients(C)completed interviews,with mean ages 75.0±9.7 and 73.4±9.4(P>0.1).Among S,28.7%were cataract blind(presenting vision≤6/60)in≥1 eye,compared to 47.1%of C(P<0.01).95.1%and 77.1%of S and C were illiterate(P<0.01).In S,23%knew cataract-operated persons,compared to 48.2%in C(P<0.01).Mean housing space/resident were 12.2±13.5 m2 and 16.7±12.5 m2 in S and C(P<0.05).Among S,48.8%found getting to hospital easy,compared to 71.1%in C(P<0.01).78.5%would pay for surgery in S,96.4%in C(P<0.01).
Conclusion:Outreach screening identifies poorer,less-educated persons with less knowledge of cataract and greater transportation barriers, though visual burden and willingness to pay for surgery are less than in clinic.
