Clinicopathology plays important roles in disease diagnosing. It might also provide new clues to basic research topics. While reviewing histological slides of the corneal buttons removed from fungal keratitis patients during corneal transplantation,we found that different fungal growth patterns in the corneas.Correlating the growth patterns with corresponding pathogenic results obtained with same samples revealed that different pathogenic fungal strains tend to manifest specific growth pattern. This finding was reproducible in experimental fungal keratitis in animals.Based on these observations,we propose that lamellar keratoplasty might be useful for treating some fungal keratitis. |
