Objectives:To determine causes of visual impairment in patients at 7 Low Vision Service Centers in Shanghai,China within the year of 2007.
Method:This study evaluated 276 low vision patients who had received Low vision rehabilitation services in 7 Low Vision Services Centers in Shanghai within the year of 2007(47%female,53%male;average age,48.9 years).
Results:The main causes of visual impairment were pathological myopia(66.3%),age-related macular degeneration(6.5%),optic atrophy(4.7%),after retinal detachment surgery(4.3%),amblyopia(4.3%),congenital cataracts(1.8%),corneal diseases(1.8%),glaucoma(1.4%),diabetic retinopathy(1.4%),and others(7.5%).
Conclusions:Pathological myopia is the leading cause of visual impairment in patients who had received Low vision rehabilitation in Shanghai,China.There is a significant difference between china and western country in the main cause of visual impairment in low vision rehabilitation services.
