Spherical aberration has been known to degrade vision, especially vision in dim light when the pupils are dilated. In fact,of the various higher order aberrations, spherical aberration is among the highest and the most detrimental to vision. Our cornea has positive spherical aberration which is not corrected by conventional spherical intraocular lens implanted during cataract surgery. The new revolutionary Tecnis1 has-0.27 μm of spherical aberration. This is targeted to fully correct the+0.27 μm spherical aberration of the average Caucasian cornea in order to improve the post-operative contrast sensitivity. It also reduces the IOL power calculation error. While the Caucasian cornea exhibits an average of+0.27 μm of spherical aberration, our study has shown that in our local ethnic Han dominated population, the average spherical aberration was higher at+0.31 μm.Despite having the highest amount of negative spherical aberration among all the current intraocular lenses, our population demonstrates a small amount of residual positive spherical aberration post-operatively after Tecnis1 implantation. |
