Purpose: To observe the different effects on corneal endothelial cells damage in iridectomy surgery between using Nd:YAG laser simply and combination with krypton laser.
Methods: 53 patients 87 eyes of primary angle-closure glaucoma in early clinical or chronic stage with only peripheral scotoma of visual field defect were included and randomly divided into two groups. Group A (28 patients 41 eyes) underwent Nd:YAG laser iridectomy simply while group B(25 patients 46 eyes) did the combination surgery of krypton laser with Nd:YAG laser iridectomy. Counting of corneal endothelial cells、characteristics of cells edema、iris hemorrhage were observed before and 1 hour 、1 day、1 week and 4 weeks after surgery.
Results: There were no significant differences in the number of cells 1 hour and 1 day after surgery between two groups. In group A, incidences of cells edema and iris hemorrhage were significantly higher than those in group B(P<0.5, P<0.05). After 4 weeks’ observation, we found the notably decreasing in the number of endothelial cells (P <0.05).
Conclusions: It is more easily to cause corneal endothelial damage with Nd:YAG laser simply than combination with krypton laser iridectomy.
